Random Thoughts

  • Tuesdays seem to be good days around here for random thoughts.  I wonder why that is.
  • Rocky the Dog took a spill last night and I was worried he busted his knee again.  Thankfully, it appears that he didn’t.
  • Today is Fat Tuesday, which in Metro Detroit means Paczki (pronounced: punch-key) Day.  (It you don’t know what they are, see the picture above.)  I’d like it if someone brought some in to work.  I guess I could have.  What are your Fat Tuesday traditions?
  • I’m slowly starting to add some blog friends to Facebook.  If it’s someone I’ve “known” awhile, I’m more apt to do it.  If you want to connect, drop me a line at kim@perfectlycursedlife.com.
  • Fat Tuesday means Lent starts tomorrow.  The Guilty Catholic in me feels like I should give something up for Lent. But I don’t know how strong my willpower is lately.  Oh yeah, I do.  It’s not strong at all.  It’s wimpy willpower.
  • “Careless Whisper” is one of the weirdest songs ever.
  • The Duggars (now “19 Kids and Counting”) start up tonight.  I hope my DVR is ready for that and for “Lost.”
  • What’s the deal with Google Buzz?  Should I be doing something with it?
  • There’s still time to contribute to Drop of Ink.  We haven’t gotten any visual art yet, so that would be much appreciated.  Of course, anything would be much appreciated.

What’s on your mind today?

Lent starts TOMORROW?? Ah! Mister wants to give up eating out at restaurants for lent but I didn't know it was so soon! This calls for an emergency mexican outing tonight. Thanks for the heads up!

Yep, Lent starts tomorrow. Maybe you can start lent late. Does he know that Lent starts tomorrow? Just don't tell him. :)

Ha, why do you think Careless Whisper is so weird?

    • February 16, 2010 at 2:46 pm

I think it's the whispery nature of George Michael's voice captured with just the right amount of smooth jazz.

I cannot figure out what the hell to do with Google Buzz (and Wave for that matter). My Fat Tuesday tradition: deciding whether or not to attend Ash Wednesday services tomorrow…

    • February 16, 2010 at 2:45 pm

I have the excuse of work and class all day tomorrow so I don't have time for services. That's one way to make a decision.

Wow…no time for Jesus huh, Kim. Must be nice. *smirk*

    Those look so delicious.

I hear you on the guilty Catholic thing.

Don't they look amazing? I'm dying for one right now.

I'd like to contribute to Drop of Ink but I think I am getting tripped up by the Beginnings/Endings theme.

I don't really understand Google Buzz, but I am slow to pick things up. I only got a twitter account a week ago and I don't really use it.

    • February 16, 2010 at 2:44 pm

Think of the theme as being very open-ended. Anything can be argued to have to do with beginnings and endings if you think about it.

I have come to absolutely adore the Duggars. When they first came on TV, I didn't like them – they didn't show much personality and gave off the creepy uber-religious vibe. But now they just seem so much more fun and adorable.

    • February 16, 2010 at 2:44 pm

I think they're just so interesting. I mean, I don't agree with most of their opinions, but they're so interesting. I did a few posts about them last year.

i'm so glad you asked what was on my mind… a boy. a boy is on my mind. last week he was in my arms, and last night he was on my phone, and today, he is on my mind. 😉

Nice! I'm intrigued by this development.

I watched four hours of LOST on Saturday to catch up. So ready to finally get answers.

And I think I've finally picked a submission, too. Sorry it has taken so long.

    • February 16, 2010 at 2:43 pm

I'm excited you're submitting! I was hoping you would.

Lost is great in big doses. You get sooooooooo into it that way.

I just had a paczki — I usually don't endulge…because most of the times, they're from the grocery store or some other crappy place. This time someone actually went to Hamtramack and got some from a Polish bakery. It was like an orgasm for my mouth. (sorry for the visual) :)

Having grown up near Pennsylvania Dutch country, we have the tradition of fastnachts: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fasnacht_%28pastry… . Looks like they're similar to the Paczki except that they're made from potato dough. There's only one good German bakery here in Northern VA (that I know of) and I ordered a dozen to have for dessert tonight. I truly wait all year for these things!

So far I don't see how Buzz is going to do anything that we aren't already doing with Facebook and Twitter. I turned it off.

As far as giving up something for Lent… didn't you already give up carbs this year?!?! I think that's plenty!

I'd love to connect on Facebook!

Check this awesome new comment format! : ) I like.
I was raised a protestant, so I have avoided lent my whole life. I do enjoy the fish fry's, though!

  13. February 16, 2010 at 8:31 pm

Mormons don't do lent. Of course, I'm not Mormon anymore, so this is irrelevant.
I like the Duggars except everytime I see the mom I can't stop thinking about how many YEARS of her life she's been pregnant…WOW.

I've never heard of Paczki, but it looks delicious! I disabled Google Buzz. I spend enough time on the web without needing to be even more confused!

I'm not Catholic, so I'm not giving anything up for Lent. I just found out (thanks to blogs) about this whole “Shrove Tuesday” thing…I'm down for eating pancakes for dinner!
As for Google Buzz, no idea what the heck it is or what on earth I'm supposed to be doing. I suppose I should research it a little. But then again, I probably won't. Ha!

Oh man I loved Paczki Day as a kid in Catholic school! Even though I don't do the Catholic traditions/religion/guilt thing anymore I still have a soft spot in my heart for Lent. I think it's the whole challenge aspect of it. Although if you are feeling low levels of willpower I quite like the idea of adding something positive to your day for 40 days. Like, compliment someone every day, or write out something you are thankful for every day, etc. You get the idea.
